Description
Each poster in this ELA Learning Scales set provides a mini-rubric that can be used both by teachers and students to assess progress toward a 6th-10th grade ELA learning target. The targets are an adaptation of the Common Core State Standards that I created by rewording the standards in student-friendly language where appropriate and breaking the standards into multiple parts when they contained more skills than I could address in a single lesson.

How to Use these Learning Scales
Share the learning target and criteria with students before beginning a lesson. You can have them do a quick self-assessment. Have students hold up the number of fingers to represent where they think they are on the scale. Do the same at the end of class, or use an exit ticket based on these learning scales.
On the scale, 3 represents mastery of the standard. The foundational skill or base required to begin learning for the standard is 1, intermediary knowledge and skills are 2, and achieving above and beyond the standard is 4. The scale is cumulative, so in order to score a 3 the student must also be able to do 1 and 2.
I have also provided a blank, editable template so that you can adjust the wording of any learning scale that doesn’t fit the needs of your classroom.
