Learning Scales Bundle

Learning Scales Bundle for ELA Standards

These coordinating ELA learning scales resources provide detailed criteria for achievement of each language arts standard along with opportunities for formative and informal assessment of progress. The scales are 4-point rubrics. A level of 4 is going beyond the standard. Level 3 is attaining the standard. 1 and 2 are prerequisite skills or knowledge. The language of the learning scales posters is duplicated in the self-assessment reflection forms and the exit tickets.

How to Use these ELA Learning Scales

First, share the learning target and criteria with students before beginning a lesson. Display the learning scales poster for the standard you will be teaching. To do this, you can either print the poster for a wall display or project the PDF page on your whiteboard.

You may want to have students do a quick self-assessment at the start of class. Ask them to hold up 1 – 4 fingers to represent where they think they are on the scale. At the end of class, use an exit ticket based on the ELA learning scales to have students reflect on their current level of mastery.

Periodically (near the end of a unit or grading period), ask students to complete a self assessment form. This goes into more detail in order to document their level of mastery. The self assessment form can also be included in a student portfolio as evidence of progress.
