You could use this ELA standards checklist as a cheat sheet for planning lessons and standards-based assessments with the Common Core. However, it is really designed as a chart for your middle school language arts students to assess and track their own progress in student data folders.

Copy pages 4-19 for each student to place in his or her binder; then print back-to-back and hole punch if desired. (I copy the pages at 75% zoom before students glue them into their composition notebooks.)
How to Use this ELA Standards Checklist
The text of the standards is a student-friendly adaptation of the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts. I have simplified the text in some standards and broken standards into two or more entries when I felt a given standard was more than could be addressed in a single lesson. This text matches my ELA standards “We can” posters, which I post on a Daily Objectives board in my classroom. Students look at the objectives board as part of our entering class routine and use that cue to mark the standards in their own checklists.
The bold words in each standard are academic vocabulary terms included in my Academic Vocabulary Word Wall set. Seeing the word emphasized in the standard helps to remind me and my students to revisit our word wall more frequently.
The 1 – 4 self-assessment scale allows for two levels of mastery, and I like to have students reflect on their degree of confidence after they have mastered a standard.
1 – Novice – I am just beginning to learn this and don’t really understand it yet.
2 – Apprentice – I am starting to understand this, but I still need support.
3 – Practitioner – I can do this on my own.
4 – Expert – I understand this well enough to teach it to someone else.
